DAY 1
Have teachers assign computers to class.
1. Lets go through the parts of a computer:
On the right side is a divice called a mouse. You enter information into the computer by pointing clicking and dragging so it is also an input device.
Computers can use diskettes, CD's, the hard drive, and information from the internet these can be both input information information comming into the computer, and output information, devices or places that information can be save onto. To get information into or out of the computer from a diskette or CD there is a disk drive, and or CD drive. Sometimes they are on the computer itself which is an internal drive, or you have what is called an external drive which means it is a separate piece of hardware and is attached to your computer by a cable.
Can you tell me an example in this room of a computer with an internal drive? an external drive?
The monitor is where you can see the information like a TV. point to your monitor, and say monitor. The monitor is an output device after you enter your information it comes out onto the monitor so you can see it.
The printers are also output devices they print out the information onto paper which is then called a hard copy. How many of you have heard people talk about getting a hard copy of something? All it means is the information is on paper.
Lets turn on your computer.
The first things you see on your monitors screen are pictures and icons this is called your computers desktop. Move your mouse. Can you see the arrow? The mouse moves the arrow. See how far you can move the arrow around the screen. If it the arrow isn't to the edge and you can't move your mouse any more just pick up the mouse move it onto another place on your mouse pad and move it some more. Did you notice that when you pick the mouse up that the arrow doesn't move it stays where it was until you put the mouse down and slide it across the mouse pad again.
Now find the icon or picture of the internet with the mouse guide the arrow to this icon and click once on it.
This is Our School Districts Home Page.
Don't click on any of the icons you see we are not going to go into the internet today. You will see that this page has Manti High School, Ephraim Middle School, and Ephraim Elementary icons. If you click on these you would get information about that school.
Now with the mouse move the arrow off of the page to the left side you will see a yellow folder that says Education. Using your mouse double click (click two times fast) on the folder that says education. Now you will see several icons. Move the arrow to the one that says index. With the mouse click and hold down the button don't let go. Drag this icon to the School District Home page and let go of the mouse button. You now know how to point, click, and drag things with the mouse.
###If this page is on the school Server tell how to get to computer lab page HERE:######
On the right side is a scroll bar with your mouse make the arrow go over to the scroll bar and click and hold on the down arrow, the up arrow, and the button inbetween see if you can click and hold on to this button, move your mouse up and down. This moves the page up and down, you are scrolling the page. Now move the arrow onto the page and click once, look at your keyboard there are some arrow keys push down on any of the arrows you will see the arrow on the screen move in the direction of the arrow you are holding down. Hold down the down arrow keep it down. Using these arrow keys are another way to scroll and move around on a page.

Materials:
4th, 5th,:
Readiness Activities:
Draw an analogy between the care of a favorite toy (such as a bike)
and the care of a computer. Ask the students what rules they have for
taking care of their toys. Also ask what happens if their toys break.
Discuss the importance of learning how to properly care for their toys
and computers.
Briefly review why it's important to have rules when using a
computer system and when working in the computer lab. The costs of
hardware and software, the need for all students to share hardware and
software, and the use of the computer lab as an instructional area
necessitate proper maintenance of the computer system.
